SEPTEMBER LETTER
I have handed over this month’s letter to Karen Armbrister who has written the following report of our children’s Holiday Bible Club, which took place during the second week in August. Do please also look on our website for more about HBC www.draycotegroup.co.uk
After struggling for helpers and not knowing until June that would definitely be able to run a club – thinking hats went on and we came up with a theme of ‘Jesus in the 21st Century’ which gave us an opportunity to look at how we live as Christians in today’s busy modern world. A new style three-day club was announced and the applications started to come in. Some of you had already booked holidays; I am sorry about that but we really couldn’t commit to a club until sufficient helpers came forward.
We had a different theme for each day; kindness, thankfulness and ‘growing in faith’ and our fantastic group of Team Leaders and helpers came up with a variety of activities to support the themes outlined. Activities were customised so as to be appropriate for each age group of children. We were lucky enough to have offers of help from Pam Goodwin and Vivienne Garrod-Grinnell to run art and clay workshops for the children so these were scheduled into each day as well as a ‘no-cooking cookery’ session for each group. In the hall we came together for songs, prayers, reporting back on activities and ‘story time with Anna’ – a 1st Century Galilean woman who had been a part of the group following Jesus and told us how things had been around Jesus and some of the stories he had told.
Additionally –we were pleased to introduce the story of Gilly and Karen; two school girls who both learnt from the other. Gilly, a hugely attractive and very cool teenager, taught Karen a lesson in how to be cooler and Karen, a less cool, church going teenager taught Gilly a lesson in how to be kinder and more thoughtful and thankful in her life. I have a feeling we may hear more from them...........
Thanks are due to the many people who helped us this year, and not least a group of fantastic teenagers; Clare, Megan, Anna, Will, Jane, John, Joely, Ella, Amy and Frankie who were complete stars; so helpful, willing and great with all the children – and the adults!
So – now we begin to think about our final workshops for 2010; Harvest on Saturday 25th September, and Advent on Saturday 27th November, then it’s on to HBC 2011. If you would like to be a part of this amazing team of helpers do please give me a call...we are waiting to hear from you!
Love and prayers,
Barbara.
