Karen is nervous. She is starting at a new school as her parents have moved. She is worried she won’t make any new friends and whether the work will be difficult. She feels pleased though that the school has told her that someone will be there to look after her. When she arrives at school she waits for the person in the playground. Karen is quiet and a bit old fashioned in appearance. She isn’t much bothered about fashion, make up or clothes............. |
|
Gilly is cool.......very cool. She has been asked to look after Karen and she isn’t very happy about it. She makes her way to the playground hoping Karen will be as cool as her – maybe someone to hang out with; but oh dear......................Karen doesn’t look like her type of person at all........ After some shaky introductions they go to assembly and Gilly is horrified when Karen sings the hymns loudly and seems to enjoy it. She reluctantly agrees to show Karen around but warns her not to get in her way...........

The next day Karen tries to look cool like Gilly. Unfortunately she isn’t very good at putting on lipstick. What a mess! Gilly is horrified and tries to wipe it off making it even worse......
In the meantime Karen is worried.......she went out last night to her church youth club and didn’t get her homework finished. She needs to ask Gilly for help finishing it but will she help?
|
Gilly is shocked when Karen admits she hasn’t finished her homework. Although Gilly says she spends a lot of time out with her friends she never says where she goes or what their names are....and she always seems to finish her homework. It seems Karen has been out somewhere and that’s what stopped her finishing her homework. Gilly tries to find out where she went but Karen is being vague about it.................. |

Gilly has been making out her birthday list. Karen doesn’t even know what a birthday list is. Gilly explains ‘It’s when you write down everything you want then your parents buy it’. Karen is shocked. It’s her birthday too and she has saved half towards a new mobile as she lost her old one. Gilly wants a new phone too but Karen can’t understand this as the old one still works fine. Karen explains to Gilly that money is tight in her house as her father has lost his job. Gilly is having a cool sleepover party although she won’t say who is coming when Karen asks. Karen finally admits to Gilly she goes to a Church youth club and when it’s someones birthday they put on a fun birthday party for that person. She is excited about hers and tells Gilly she can come if she wants to – although it’s the same night as Gilly’s sleepover. Gilly is not impressed by Karen going to church ‘It’s all old people and really boring ‘she says.................................

| Karen explains that – what a surprise – Gilly turned up at her birthday party last night at the church Youth Club – and what’s more she seemed to enjoy it... |
|
|
Gilly rushes in. She is excited and tells Karen how much she enjoyed the Youth Club. It seems she decided to postpone her party and try Karen’s instead.
She enjoyed meeting Karen’s friends who even included a rather nice boy called Brad............
She was surprised how kind everyone was and she didn’t even get told off when she spilt a drink. She thought everyone was friendly and nice. She decided that perhaps she didn’t need a new mobile phone after all. Karen is delighted because she was able to get her new phone when her parents paid the remaining half towards it for her birthday present.

Well – how about this......Gilly has taught Karen how to dress more fashionably and has even persuaded the school council to let the girls wear trousers because Karen prefers them to skirts.
Karen is starting to look quite stylish at school – and is starting to like Gilly more and more. They go to the Church Youth Club together now and Gilly just seems nicer and kinder than she was before.
Perhaps she too has learnt things from Karen.................................
